Ms. Weatherford, i’ve seen a display of your works as well as your.. quote unquote ‘battles’ against racism.
While i do appreciate the good fight where it is due, you must understand that not EVERYTHING is deliberately racist.
Assumptions and stereotypes are what racism is founded upon…not superficial appearances. You quoted “Me and my grandmother call a spade a spade” .. show a picture of a spade to a child and they will identify it as a ‘shovel’ .. show them a picture of any ethnicity and they will simply refer to them as ‘a person’. Racism is taught, not acquired.
You want to end racism? End it with the stereotype. Your works on educating children and pursuing to strike racist material from the literary world are steps in the right direction, but attacking images with no direct racist intentions is not the way to go.
For instance, Mr. Popo from the Japanese animation “Dragonball” ..
You were quick to announce that his lips and skin color were racist against african-americans.. but you completely shrugged off the Turban and flying carpet.
…Or are african americans the only one’s targeted by racism?
One may then draw the conclusion that your views of Racism against African Americans as ‘elitist’ .. favoring only your race as the ones being targeted.
..This is the kind of logic you are displaying.
It is a logic that can and is twisted to favor the user’s agenda.
I’m not saying your work is anything but good, it is. You’re goals are noble.
You simply need to focus on the REAL problem.
    Thank you for your consideration.

Wow, that Pokemon controversy never dies. When did I publish that op-ed? 2000. Twelve years ago. My kids are grown now.
